For most Chinese born in the 1980s, their collective knowledge of Ne Zha — a mythological figure — comes from then popular comic books adapted from the ancient novel Fengshen Yanyi (The Investiture of the Gods), as well as the 1986 TV series The Journey to the West and the 1990 hit drama Fengshen Bang.

But in the new animated film Ne Zha, the title protagonist has a big change to his look.
他顶着齐刘海,耷拉着苦瓜脸,还有让人始终无法忽视的烟熏妆,时不时目露凶光,声音粗哑,标志是邪魅的笑。
他的一举一动、一颦一笑,无不挑战着观众的传统审美。对于为何把哪吒设计成这个样子,导演饺子透露,前前后后大概设计了一百版的哪吒形象,最后选了这一版,据说造型灵感来自集体熬夜赶工的团队。
饺子说:
“最初也想过做很乖很可爱的样子,但后来觉得不过瘾,最终,这版黑眼圈的哪吒反而得到了团队的认可。”
“很多人会说挺丑,不想看。为什么选这个,因为他是最契合我们电影中心思想的——打破成见。一开始大家看到他的形象,就会产生不好的感觉,但我们希望看过电影之后,哪吒能够获得打破成见,扭转命运,所以选择这么一个形象。”
除了哪吒形象的变化,情节和人物的设定,更是从头到尾的颠覆。

在原来的“哪吒闹海”故事中,哪吒闹东海、抽龙筋、痛打龙王三太子。四海龙王水淹陈塘关,哪吒为了不连累父母,挥剑自刎。
他反抗的是父权和封建专治。
In the past, Ne Zha was known for his fight against patriarchy and autocracy.

而在饺子的电影中,哪吒反抗的是偏见。
In Yang Yu's film he is fighting prejudice: Ne Zha is hated, feared and shunned as the reincarnation of a devil. But Ne Zha believes his fate is not predetermined and that he can choose to be a demon or a god.

电影对龙王之子敖丙的改编也非常颠覆。
在原版故事中,哪吒和敖丙是仇敌,哪吒曾经打死敖丙,抽取龙筋,自此与东海结下不共戴天之仇。
而在这部电影里,敖丙冰清玉洁的形象堪比“小龙女”,还与哪吒成了相爱相杀的朋友。
Another character, the Dragon King's third son Aobing, is the mirror image of Ne Zha's personality. Though born as a god, he almost destroys Ne Zha's mythical birthplace, Chen Tang Guan, in a selfish quest to revive his family's fortunes.
另一个人物,龙王三太子敖丙,是一个与哪吒的个性形成镜面对比的形象。虽然生而为神,却自私地为了龙族利益,差点毁掉了哪吒的家乡陈塘关。
而仙风道骨的太乙真人在电影中则变身搞笑角色,肥头大耳,说一口四川普通话。虽然“笑果”非凡,但也有些观众不太认同这个角色的一些“三俗”玩笑。
“凤凰男”申公豹的角色虽是反派,却也因为结巴的设定笑点不断。
而以往文学作品中懦弱而自私的陈塘关总兵李靖,这次却是为了救哪吒,甘愿牺牲自己性命的好父亲。
Ne Zha's father, Li Jing, is the chief who governs the fictional port city Chen Tang Guan. He is no longer cowardly and selfish as depicted in the past works; instead, he becomes a noble father willing to sacrifice his own life to rescue Ne Zha.
母亲殷夫人则被塑造为一个乐观开朗的“女强人”,在忙公务之余也不忘陪伴孩子,每次哪吒遭诘难时,她都第一时间站出来护着他。
片中对李靖夫妇的塑造既为影片埋下一个强大的泪点,又赋予了影片的教育意义。
可以说,《哪吒》不仅是一次颠覆传统的改编,更是一部真正的亲子题材电影。

《哪吒之魔童降世》导演饺子
在此之前,导演兼编剧饺子已经和哪吒“死磕”了五年。光剧本就磨了两年,总共经历了66版修改。
It took Yang Yu, the film's director and screenwriter, two years to refine the script of Ne Zha, and the film was in production for three years. It is the most complex animated production ever made in China.

哪吒也像饺子生的一个小魔球,怀胎时间长而痛楚。而他自己和整个作品的经历也很“哪吒”。

反复考虑后,才最终敲定了哪吒最喜欢玩的游戏——“鸡毛毽子”。
不仅是情节,动画效果上的制作也耗费了许多心血。
Ne Zha has more than 1,300 special effects shots, and it took over 20 Chinese special-effects studios, employing more than 1,600 people, to realise the film’s fairy tale setting, the mysterious Dragon King’s palace, and a stunning fight between fire and water. One spectacular scene alone took two months to complete.
《哪吒》里有1300多场特效镜头。20多家中国特效工作室的1600多名员工,将这部电影里的神话故事背景、神秘的龙宫与一场惊心动魄的水火大战逐一呈现。仅其中一个壮观浩大的场景,就耗费了两个月时间才完成。

One of the highlights is that Oriental aesthetics are often featured in these productions. The new Ne Zha film also has such designs, especially in the scenes about a painting scroll dubbed as The Mountains and Rivers.

The end of Ne Zha releases a trailer of animated film Jiang Ziya, which will hit theaters next year. Director Wuershan's Fengshen Trilogy, which has taken him ten years to complete, will respectively release one installment each year from 2020. As all these films are inspired from China's classic novel Fengshen Yanyi(The Investiture of the Gods), in many ways, a new cinematic universe about these Chinese superheroes has been launched.
